![]() When I thought more about the deck, it became apparent pretty quickly it was going to be difficult to build a version of this deck which would play at a low enough power level for the average game of casual Commander. (Also, Jhoira gets to draw a card off Grinding Station, for whatever that's worth.A few months ago, I thought Jhoira, Ageless Innovator could be a fun commander who would let me do cool things with Goblin Welder and Goblin Engineer, which are cards I enjoy playing. However, grinding station works better for your deck than it would for other decks, as you already play a large number of zero-mana artifacts, so it might still be worth trying. (Eventually, your Grinding Station will mill the Lotus Petal and Brain Freeze, and can proceed to create mana with the Lotus Petal and use the mana to cast the Brain Freeze to mill out the table as you would normally.)įor most UR decks, the grinding station isn't necessary, and you would probably be better off just playing another way to fetch Brain Freeze like Mystical Tutor, Solve the Equation, Spellseeker, etc. ![]() Grinding Station mainly functions as a way to start comboing off without Brain Freeze or Lotus Petal: if you draw Grinding Station + Underworld Breach + 0 mana artifact (but haven't found Brain Freeze or Lotus Petal yet), you can use that combo to self-mill. (Ideally, you want to leave a card or two in your own library, since the turn might pass back to you if one of your opponents has a card like Noxious Revival to prevent themselves from decking the turn after you milled their entire library.) Right, you start using Lotus Petal + Brain Freeze to repeatedly self-mill, and once your storm count is high enough you can point the Brain Freeze at your opponent(s) and mill them out to win the game. I guess you're mill yourself with freeze then play lotus petal until the storm count is high enough that you can just mill everyone with freeze right mono-black decks like K'rrik and Sidisi, or mono-red decks like Birgi). At this point, basically the only cEDH decks that play Aetherflux Resevoir are the storm decks that are priced into playing it because color restrictions limit their access to better wincons (e.g. Brain Freeze, which is your kill spell after you've built up your storm count, but also helps you assemble the high storm count through self-mill, and in a pinch you can even play it from your hand in the early game as a Thought Scour-esque effect against an opponent who just cast an Enlightened Tutor to fetch a stax piece that would ruin your day.)īefore the printing of Underworld Breach, you'd sometimes see Aetherflux Resevoir as a storm wincon in Grixis decks like Kess or Jeleva now, the spell has all but vanished from the format. I'm struggling to understand how Aetherflux Resevoir has "more versatility." One of the reasons that it's basically disappeared from cEDH decks (where it was once used as a storm wincon) is that it lacks versatility: it's a 4-mana sorcery that is basically only useful on the turn that you go off.
